The Talyllyn Railway is my favourite of the Welsh narrow gauge lines, possibly because it was the first I ever visited, soon after it re-opened in the 1950s, when I was about 9 or 10.
I have revisited it a number of times since, and once spent a week working on the extension beyond Abergynolwyn to Nant Gwernol, widening the track bed and shifting tons of slate. Most of the photographs below date from that visit.
Basically, theTalyllyn Railway runs from Tywyn Wharf, where it connects with the standard gauge Cambrian Coast Line, up the valley to its current terminus at Nant Gwernol. It isn't very steeply graded (unlike the Ffestiniog Railway further North, and runs across the coastal plain just east of Tywyn. Above, "Sir Haydn" approaches Tywyn Pendre on the evening of 19th June 1972.
The line starts from Tywyn Wharf. Here, "Edward Thomas" waits to leave with a passenger train on 19.6.1972.
At the beginning of the line along the valley side is Rhydyronen. Here no 2 "Dolgoch" heads up the valley on 6th June 1974
